Alone, together // Alleine, zusammen features work made in 2020-21 individually by featured artist Kristen Tordella-Williams and collaboratively between Tordella-Williams and artists and musicians from the USA and Germany. The first work is a portfolio of drawings made solely by Tordella-Williams using watercolor and mixed media on toned Canson paper. Titled the Quarantine Portfolio, each lifelike drawing features items found around the artist’s home and were made in the early days of the pandemic. Due to the timing, all of the mundane objects have a sinister undertone while displaying the small moments of the early days of isolation.

The second work is Bound, an experimental video piece made by salem2salem residency alumni over the summer of 2020 into the fall. The twenty-minute video features original music scored by German musicians Michael T. Otto and Phillipe Wozniak as well as American musician Will Phalen. The video imagery features depictions of nature, performance art, destruction, and binding/unbinding with performances by American artists Amy Kaps and Kristen Tordella-Williams as well as German artist Hans Winkler. The lyrics focus on the international lockdown and its resulting ripple effect on our sanity and day-to-day experience. Multiple volunteers from America and Germany contributed to the final work by recording the text and contributing their own audio and video readings.

Finally, the bright red Alligator Dream sculptures greet viewers at the front of the gallery. Alligator Dreams is a transatlantic sculptural collaboration between Kristen Tordella-Williams and Susanne Zazo. The two artists met in 2019 at the salem2salem residency program in Salem, NY and have since made sculptures, performance art, photography, poetry, and drawings centered on an abstract alligator form. The Alligator Dream piece featured in this exhibition is a culmination of two years working together over video conferencing until they were finally reunited in person to make art together in July of 2021.

Ultimately, the exhibition describes these unprecedented times when we were often physically alone, but our hearts and minds were able to come together through creative perseverance and the marvels of modern technology. Alone, together // Alleine, zusammen celebrates the spirit of collaboration and imagination despite the overarching challenges of our present moment and the bonds made between makers that transcend physical and political boundaries.

Kristen Tordella-Williams is an interdisciplinary artist and arts educator based in the American South. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently in an old slaughterhouse in Sigmaringen, Germany. She has been an artist in residence at Salem Art Works, the Ateliers im Alten Schlachthof, and Franconia Sculpture Park. Kristen has received grants from the Greater Jackson Arts Council and the Mississippi Arts Commission to support the creation of the Eudora Welty Wreath, a large-scale, community-engaged public sculpture. Kristen is the Vice-President of the Mid-South Sculpture Alliance board and is the coordinator of the Midtown Sculpture Walk in Jackson, MS. Thematically, her work shows the impact of the past on our present through labor, both personal and communal. Our imprint on the environment around us and the reciprocal impressions our bodies hold from the wear and tear of working are explored in her work using a variety of materials and processes including cast iron, hand papermaking, printmaking, and collaboration.

The ensemble ‘Project-Resonance‘ was born from the meeting of two musicians Peter Bácsi and Alain Wozniak, who are enthusiastic about the common search for the living sound and interpretation.

The French musician Alain Wozniak (clarinet, flute, saxophone, electronic instruments) completed his broad education in Germany, Austria, and France. The accomplished soloist and chamber musician taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and was for many years solo clarinetist at the Theater des Westens, Berlin. As a conductor, he has won national and international prizes with the Symphonic Youth Wind Orchestra Friedrichshafen and Swiss orchestras from Au and Schaffhausen. He has been teaching and conducting at the Music School in Friedrichshafen since 2002 and is also music director of the Stadtkapelle Albstadt-Tailfingen.
Péter Bácsi is a classical guitarist from Budapest, born into a family of music-loving engineers. His musical career began at the age of 15, with László Vereczkei, and then developed further with the renowned teacher Ede Roth in Budapest and later in Győr. The years of study also brought success in competitions, both as a soloist and in ensemble playing – among others in Szeged International Guitar Competition, ‘Continuo’ Music Competition Budapest, and in Balatonfüred Guitar Festival. He received his Master’s degree in Performance in 2015 and worked in Frankfurt am Main from September 2015 to 2017. Since 2017 he lives in Friedrichshafen and works as a guitar teacher at the Musikschule Friedrichshafen.

Collaborator Bios:

Susanne Hackenbracht (DE) is a steel sculptor and painter born 1967 in Brannenburg, Germany. She has been a freelance artist since 1998 and is the co-founder of the sculpture park project “Neue Kunst am Ried” in Wald, Hohenzollern. “In Susanne Hackebrachts work every now and again elementary forms appear –like circles, semicircles, rectangles or cylinders. They seem to be like a concealed vocabulary, some sort of hidden system of notation that has to be read and decoded. Besides these forms, she often deals with the substance she uses in an elementary way. Steel, concrete, iron, glass and oil-based paint meet the observer often in a raw and visible materiality. This immediate treatment of the material – the forming out of the formless – is crucial to her work. The boundaries between wilful pieces and coincidentally made ones often become blurred. The spectre ranges as far as the appearance of the material as amor-phous mass to precisely crafted geometrical forms. In the work of Susanne Hackenbracht, these extremes aren’t mutually exclusive. Further the geometrical vocabulary provides a distancing perspective in the otherwise often intuitively and immediately appearing work.”

Amy Kaps (USA) is an interdisciplinary artist recognizable by her signature palette of Black and White Stripes with Pink accents. Possessing a predilection for the abstract and surreal while emphasizing the human form and condition, she presents a psychological puzzle enticing the viewer to question what they see. Highly conceptual with the intention of altering perception and provoking thought, she questions the status quo while reveling in a feast for the senses, deciphering common denominators while recognizing the similarities within our differences connecting us regardless of age, race or gender. Working in the realms of performance, installation, video, photography, music and words in the United States, Germany, Cuba and Spain, Amy Kaps was conceived in Columbus, Ohio, born in Brooklyn, NY, raised in suburban New Jersey, schooled in upstate NY and Japan, lived in New York, Köln, Germany and currently resides in Venice, California and occupies a studio in DTLA.

Michael T. Otto (DE) Ausgebildet an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Otto ist Pädagoge, Komponist, Arrangeur und Gründer diverser Ensembles wie z.B. „STUBENJAZZ“. Nebenbei entwickelt er mit dem Instrumentenbauer Fritz Lüttke Trompeten und Flügelhörner, ist Erfinder des in Trompeten- /Posaunen-Kreisen bekannten Whisper-Penny® und führt die künstlerische Leitung des MONTFORT JAZZ CLUB am Bodensee.

Will Phalen (USA) is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Wisconsin and currently living in Chicago, USA. His work focuses on the intersection of past, present and future in music and finding unique, innovative ways of wedding together the old and the new, the acoustic and the electronic, the fret board and the mother board — exploring folk modalities as they collide with contemporary and progressive frameworks. Will runs a record label (Sub-Urban Arts Collective), a recording studio (Cold Ghost Recordings), and a music school (Midwestern School of Music). When he’s not making music or teaching music or recording music, Will enjoys cooking meals at home, camping in the woods of Wisconsin, and visiting the Logan Square Farmer’s Market with his wife Anna, their daughter Lulu and their dog Ziggy.

Hans Winkler (DE) Hans-Christian Winkler was born in 1989 in the Black Forest and studied art education painting and graphics with Prof. Corinne Wasmuht at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. From 2014-2016, he then completed his studies in intermedia design at Discoteca Flaming Star in Stuttgart. In 2016, he also participated in the FART 1st Stuttgart South International Film Festival. Hans Winkler, participated in the salem2salem International Artist Exchange twice and trained as an art educator in 2017-2018.

Philippe Wozniak (DE) (*1985) is a German composer. His compositions never reveal the complete structure. This results in the fact that he can easily imagine his own interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality. With a conceptual approach, he tries to increase the dynamic between audience and musicians by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations. His works directly respond to the surrounding environment and use everyday experiences as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. Philippe Wozniak currently lives and works in Freiburg (Germany).

Lakes / Lines ist eine Sammlung von Arbeiten, die sich mit Formen und Volumen sowie deren Dimensionen beschäftigen. Eine Linie ist eine Abstraktion einer einzelnen Dimension. Lakes / Lines is a collection of works that explore shapes and volumes, and their dimensions. A line is an abstraction of a single dimension. A shape’s boundary is a line that curves to meet itself. A lake presents a flat surface until a boat or a breeze ripples the plane. Latitude and longitude are parts of a fabricated grid until they bend towards the poles of the earth. Leah Frankel plays with these familiar geometric abstractions and how they bleed into the real and organic. She am interested in the malleability of a grid or the flat dimensionless shadow of an object. She paints grids exposing a void, stuffed fabric sculptures juxtaposed with their silhouettes, and animated forms to show imperfections of conceptual purity when applied to our tangible world.

Leah Frankel is a visual artist whose work deals with the relationship of human existence to its remarkable environment. Using site as impetus, Frankel’s installations employ ordinary objects to draw attention to the earth’s gravity, the passing of time, or the flatness of the horizon. Her site-specific projects include Earthcube Colony at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington, D.C., a relief rendering of the Wissahickon Watershed made from reclaimed building materials at The Art Gallery at Germantown Academy, in Fort Washington, PA, and a series of installations in, around, and in response to a backyard shed in Columbus, Ohio. Leah Frankel has also worked with choreographers designing and creating sets for their performances, and recently exhibited Hardened Shapes, a collaborative project with poet Iris Cushing exploring color, shape, and pattern: a dialogue between text and image at Bright Hill Press in Treadwell, NY. Frankel completed her MFA at The Ohio State University in 2014 and is currently Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY.

In Maastricht, Peter focused on ensemble music, and had numerous concerts with violinists, singers, and cellists with different formations. He completed his diploma in 2015. From September 2015 until 2017 Peter lived and worked in Frankfurt, and since 2017 in Friedrichshafen, as a teacher of Musikschule Friedrichshafen. Together with flutist Eszter Simon he has founded ‘Duo Favilla’, whose concert activity began in 2019.

In den aktuellen Arbeiten wird der transkulturelle Aspekt der Schrift zur Grundlage für die Entwicklung von neuen Schriftkörpern und Kaligrafie Tafeln. Diese Körperlichkeit der Schrift entwickelte sich durch studieren und betrachten von mittelalterischen Handschriften von dem deutschen Mystiker Heinrich Seuse und der mitttelalterischen Miniaturenkunst (2018,Projekt Himmelskörper, SusoHaus,Überlingen)
Sie ist aber gleichzeitig inspiriert worden durch die Kalgrafie Tafeln Weltweit, Kulturübergreifend und derren kontenplativen und meditativen Wirkung. Joanna Klakla, geb 1971 in Krakau, 1990-1995 Studium für Holzschnitt und Kunsterziehung am Kunstinstitut der Pädagogischen Universität in Krakau in Polen. Dozentin der Jugendkunstschule, Bodenseekreis in Meersburg.

Ursula Erchinger wohnt in Überlingen und arbeitet als freie Künstlerin im Bereich der Malerei und Zeichnung. Parallel gründete sie 2002 eine Kunstschule für Erwachsene, die Kunstwerkstatt Überlingen. Sie studierte Kunstpädagogik und Kunst an der Universität Freiburg.
Uraufführung der neuen Komposition 55dB von Nicolas Wozniak. Für den Musiker Wozniak erklingt die Religion in Deutschland öffentlich durch Glockengeläut und den Ruf des Muezzins. Mit der Oboe spürt er den Geräuschen und Klängen des Minaretts und Glockenturms nach und entwickelt Parallelen dieser unterschiedlichen Welten. Wozniak studiert an der Musikhochschule Würzburg bei Prof. Jochen Müller-Brincken.

Zu dieser Ausstellung werden wir einen Katalog veröffentlichen.

In Icon Body, the transcultural aspect of writing becomes the basis for the development of new typefaces and calligraphy tables. Joanna Klakla is inspired by the calligraphy tables worldwide, cross-cultural and their content-platative and meditative effect. Premiere of the new composition 55dB. For musician Nicolas Wozniak, the religion in Germany sounds publicly through the ringing of bells and the call of the muezzin. 15. Die Neuwerk Kunsthalle e.V. hat für die Kunstnacht ein spezielles Konzept ausgearbeitet.
Kunst wird in den Kellerräumen präsentiert – in den Werkstätten der Neuwerker – inmitten der Arbeitsatmosphäre zwischen Werkzeugen und Maschinen, Fertigem und Unfertigem.
Der Keller hat eine Vielzahl von Funktionen und er ist eine besondere Art des Freiraums. Er ist Lager-, Werk- und Hobbyraum, er bietet Schutz oder dient als Versteck. Mit Kellerräumen assoziieren wir Dunkelheit, vielleicht auch Ängste, sie wecken Erinnerungen an Marmeladengläser und eingemachte Kirschen, Kartoffeln und Bier.
Keller und Kunst haben eine mächtige Wirkung.

Art is presented in the basement rooms – in the workshops of the Neuwerker – in the middle of the working atmosphere between tools and machines, the finished and the unfinished.

Alain Wozniak zeigt mit „Dialogues Souterrains“ eine musikalische Performance mit Klarinette und Oboe – vereint mit einer elektronischen Toninstallation. Diese Arbeit widmet sich der Architektur des Klangs im Raum in Interaktion mit dem Publikum. Alain Wozniak wurde in Frankreich geboren, spielt Klarinette, ist Lehrer und Dirigent. With “Dialogues Souterrains”, Alain Wozniak presents a musical performance with clarinet and oboe – combined with an electronic sound installation. “Die Geschichte der Darstellung der Landschaft durch die Spanier in Amerika und die Briten in den Vereinigten Staaten hat eine vorherrschende koloniale Stellung. Expeditionen auf den amerikanischen Kontinent umfassten häufig Künstler, die die Topographie für militärische und proprietäre Zwecke beschreiben sollten. Das Bild der Landschaft war kein kontemplatives, sondern eine Eigentumserklärung.
Um die aktuellen politischen Probleme in Bezug auf Einwanderung, Rasse und Identität zu verstehen, reiste ich an die Südgrenze, um die Ästhetik der Grenzlandschaft zu dokumentieren. Trocken und zerklüftet ist die Landschaft durch eine künstliche Narbe geteilt, die sich von Westen nach Osten entlang des Kontinents durch die Topographie schlängelt.
Der politische Charakter dieser offenen Wunde materialisiert sich in einer Mauer mit Gefühlen von Nationalismus, Protektionismus und Absurdität. Das Grenzland ist die Darstellung einer Region, die jemand anderem gehört, ein Stück Land, das uns gleichzeitig anzieht und abstößt. Für die einen ist das Grenzland das Ziel, für die anderen ist die Region die Heimat.” Xavier Tavera
Nach dem Umzug von Mexiko-Stadt in die Vereinigten Staaten lernte Xavier Tavera, wie es sich anfühlt, Teil einer Subkultur zu sein – der Einwanderergemeinschaft. Der Entfremdung unterworfen, hat den Fokus seiner Fotografien verändert, um das Leben derjenigen zu teilen, die an den Rand gedrängt werden. Bilder haben Einblicke in die Vielfalt zahlreicher Gemeinschaften gegeben und denen, die oft unsichtbar sind, eine Stimme gegeben. Tavera hat seine Arbeiten ausgiebig in den Partnerstädten von Minnesota gezeigt, national und international einschließlich Chile, Uruguay und China. Seine Arbeiten sind Teil der Sammlungen des Minneapolis Institute of Art, Plaines Art Museum, Minnesota Museum of American Art, Minnesota History Center und Weisman Art Museum. Er erhielt das McKnight-Stipendium, den Jerome Travel Award, das State Arts Board und das Bronica-Stipendium.
Im Juli präsentieren wir zwei Einzelausstellungen von Mitgliedern der Grupo Soap del Corazon im ProjekTraum FN.

In July we are proud to present two solo exhibitions by members of Grupo Soap del Corazon in ProjekTraum FN
Founded in 2000 by Xavier Tavera and Dougie Padilla, Grupo Soap del Corazón celebrates Latino artists and culture and the Latinization of Minnesota and the upper Midwest of the USA. To date, Grupo Soap has featured the work of almost 90 local, regional, and international artists.

Heaven y Hell
“2017 was a nasty year in the United States for anybody politically to the left of Attila
the Hun. We’ve gone from an intelligent, educated, articulate, cultured, and compassionate president, our first president of color, Barack Obama… to an inarticulate, uncultured, quasi-educated, uncompassionate and greedy narcissist of questionable intellect and morals in Donald Trump. To make matters worse, there is a large portion of the American voting populace that idolizes the man and wants desperately to follow him into the abyss. The United States is being devastated by this madness.

At the very same time, my personal and artistic life is pretty darn good. Three years ago, I moved my studio down the Mississippi from Minneapolis to the little Wisconsin village of Pepin and spend much of my time making art and writing or wandering the natural world with my dog Stella. I have a wonderful family, a decently healthy body, close friends, enough money, and opportunities to show my work and serve others. As an elder, I am grateful that my spiritual path is deepening, and I am grateful that I am more and more able to pilgrimage between this world and the next. As a Mexican-American, I am also grateful that when Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) rolls around in the fall, I experience the joy of those on the other side visiting this world and celebrating with us here on earth.

Dougie Padilla is a life-long resident of Minnesota/Iowa/Wisconsin of Norwegian-Mexican-cowboy roots. He is primarily a painter, but he also draws, sculpts, does prints and ceramics, makes installations and ofrendas, does ritual, and, on rare occasion, performs. He lives with his wonderful wife in the Northeast Minneapolis arts district that he helped create and spends much of his time at his studio building in lovely rural Pepin, Wisconsin. He is a father of two and grandfather of seven and is glad to live in this world.

ProjekTraum FN l’Atelier Glidden Wozniak heißt Sie herzlich willkommen zur kommenden Ausstellung Beyond the Landscape – Landschafts Auflösung von Fryderyk Heinzel. Fryderyk Heinzel ist ein Künstler, dessen neues Werk Farbe und Fotografien auf Holz überträgt. Was als scheinbar traditionelles Landschaftsbild eines Sees, Berges oder Waldes beginnt, verwandelt sich in eine Erforschung von Materialität und flächigem Raum. Fryderyk Heinzel erforscht den Schnittpunkt von Landschaft, Geometrie und Farbe. Er macht uns bewusst, wie wir die umliegende Landschaft sehen.
Heinzel wurde 1967 in Oppeln, Schlessien, Polen geboren und lebt in Überlingen. Er studierte Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Krakau, Polen und Kunstpädagogik am Kunstinstitut der Pädagogischen Akademie, Krakau. Seit 2002 lebt und arbeitet Heinzel als freischaffender Künstler und Fotograf in der Bodenseeregion.

ProjekTraum FN l‘Atelier Glidden Wozniak extends a warm welcome for you to join us for the upcoming exhibition Beyond the Landscape – Landschafts auflösung by Fryderyk Heinzel. Fryderyk Heinzel is a photographer whose new work incorporates paint and photographs transferred onto wood. What begins as a seeming traditional landscape image of a lake, mountains or a forest is transformed into an exploration of materiality and planar space. Fryderyk Heinzel explores the intersection of landscape, geometry and color. He brings awareness to how we see the surrounding landscape.
Heinzel was born in 1967 in Oppeln, Schlessien Poland and lives in Überlingen Germany. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Krakow, Poland and art educationat the Art Institute of the Pedagogical Academy, Krakow. Since 2002 Heinzel has lived and worked as a freelance artist and photographer in the Lake Constance region in Germany.

ProjekTraum l’atelier Glidden Wozniak is proud to present the drawings of sculptor Jack Henry. Terraforms is a series of recent graphite drawings whereby the landscape reveals itself to Henry as he responds to the chaotic remnants of an initial collage process of gluing and tearing the paper away. His methods are similar to his approach to sculpture where he builds geometric forms composed of detritus from the streets of Brooklyn. Jack Henry will talk about his work at the opening reception on June 30 at 19:00. This is Jack Henry’s first solo exhibition in Europe.

Jack Henry was born in 1984 in Jackson, MS, USA and raised in the suburbs of Flint, Michigan. He received his BFA from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton and his MFA from University of Maryland, College Park with a concentration in sculpture/installation. His work has been shown throughout the US including recent shows at Lesley Heller Workspace, New York; Black and White Gallery, Brooklyn; Storefront Bushwick, Brooklyn; Dodge Gallery, New York; Nudashank, Baltimore; Fjord Gallery, Philadelphia; Space Gallery, Portland ME; Glass Curtain Gallery, Columbia College, Chicago; La Esquina Gallery, Kansas City; Kunsthalle Galapagos, Brooklyn; Ground Floor Gallery, Brooklyn; Castle Gallery, College of New Rochelle, New York; Radiator Gallery, Long Island City. ProjekTraumFN l‘atelier Glidden Wozniak extends a warm welcome to the public to join us for the upcoming two person exhibition Mooring by Mark Earnhart and Jodi Lightner. The installation is site specific, as Lightner recreated a floorplan of ProjekTraumFN’s space in her Billings, Montana studio and both artists developed the work specifically for the space. Earnhart will be presenting multiples of objects such as fabricated aluminum sculptures, miniature ladders made of wood, and laser engraved aluminum castings. Lightner’s intensly detailed work includes multiple pieces of cut mylar which are painted with ink and acrylic.

Upon an invitation to exhibit, the artists researched Friedrichshafen and wrote about the influence of place on their work:

“Friedrichshafen Germany is situated near the boarders of Switzerland and Austria on the shoreline of Lake Constance. The city is a major producer of aviation technologies and is most notably the site where the first Zeppelin Airships were designed and are still built today. The region is home to some of the world’s most innovative aviation companies and manufacturers and has a long history within the field of aeronautics and engineering. It is within this arena of lighter than air flight that our exhibition pivots.
Zeppelin Airships, blimps and dirigibles have a storied history within aeronautics and popular culture. There is the immediate fascination with the matter of scale these vessels inhabit and the gigantic infrastructures required to keep them afloat. These containers of an invisible gas lighter than air, swimming to destinations, have fascinated and enthralled generations. The impetus for this exhibition is within this invisible volume and the notion of lighter than air which is easier to experience than describe.”

The title Mooring, has to do with the idea of controlling almost unimaginable volume and scale. Mooring also has a connotation of steering and holding to a moral foundation as a reflection on the current political climate. The artists will speak about their influences and work at the opening reception on June 9th, 2017

Lightner

Jodi Lightner (b. Kansas, USA) is an Assistant Professor of Art at Montana State University Billings where she teaches courses that involve pencils, paint, and presses. She received her MFA in painting from Wichita State University in 2010 and continues her studio practice in Montana through national and international exhibitions. She has participated in artist residencies focused on studio practice at the International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Montecastello diVibio, Italy, Vermont Studio Center, and Ucross Foundation.
Lightner lives and works in Billings, Montana.

Earnhart

Mark Earnhart (b. Ohio, USA) is an Assistant Professor of Art at Montana State University Billings where he teaches Sculpture and Three-Dimensional practices. He received his MFA from the University of Maryland in 2013 and continues his practice exhibiting nationally. He has experience as a Gallery Director, Museum Preparator, Museum Educator, Studio Technician, Art Handler, Artist Assistant, Lifeguard, UPS Driver and Airplane Fueler among many other things. Earnhart lives and works in Billings, Montana.

Friedrichshafen – Knicke im Indigohimmel
Justine Johnson stellt das Weltall aus. Oder doch Kunstwerke, die daran erinnern. Ebenso wie an kleinteilige alte Fenster, die den Blick nach draußen leiten, in nichts als bläuliche Helligkeit. Und auch der Gedanke an Origami flammt kurz auf, die chinesisch-japanische Kunst des Papierfaltens. Denn wie sich auf dem dicken, fast textilartigen Japanpapier der Künstlerin die indigoblaue Farbe verteilt, das bestimmen wesentlich die Faltungen des Papiers. Die Faltungen bieten der Farbe einen Grat, an dem entlang sie rinnt, sie unterteilen das Papier aber auch in geometrische Flächen. Manches Blatt nimmt sich aus wie eine gerade noch erkennbare Hochhausarchitektur, festgehalten in der Künstlerhandschrift eines Lyonel Feininger, aber gemalt mit impressionistischem Pinsel. Und bleibt man beim Gedanken an Origami, dann überschreiten diese gefärbten Papiere die Grenze zu Objekten, die man sich allerdings vorstellen muss – weil sie nun flach ausgebreitet sind.
Die in Kalifornien geborene und in Großbritannien lebende Justine Johnson ist nach einer längeren Pause die erste Künstlerin, die im “ProjekTraum FN” von Felicia Glidden und Alain Wozniak ausgestellt wird. Sie studierte in Japan und hat sich dort mit den japanischen Textilfärbetechniken beschäftigt – auch mit Shibori, der japanischen Variante des Batikens, die sich in ihrer Ausstellung “Indigo” im “ProjekTraum” niederschlägt. “Alles was ich über die Farbe Indigo weiß, habe ich in Japan gelernt”, sagt sie. Indigo, aus Pflanzen gewonnen, ist eines der ältesten Färbemittel überhaupt. “Indigo wurde in vielen verschiedenen Kulturen verwendet.
Nicht nur in Japan, sondern auch in Afrika, Indien, China oder Nordamerika”, sagt Johnson und fährt fort: “Das Indigoblau verbindet uns alle, und es ist überall: das Blau von Jeans basiert auf Indigo.” Von einer Farbe, die wertvoller als Gold war, hat sich Indigo zum Massenrohstoff der Textilindustrie gewandelt.
Die Farbe Indigo als ein die Menschen verbindendes und sie umgebendes Element – das prägt auch Justine Johnsons Kunst, denn ihre Papierbilder sind vom Blick in den Himmel inspiriert, der in der Dämmerung vom Tiefblauen ins Schwarze übergeht. Rostrot und golden deuten sich auf Johnsons Arbeiten himmlische Leuchtfeuer und Sternhaufen an. Schließlich wird der Himmel selbst zum Relief, in einer großformatigen Wandarbeit, die aus einer Unzahl von eingefärbten Dreiecken besteht, die in den Raum ragen. Es ist ein Spiel mit der Unendlichkeit, denn das unregelmäßige Relief könnte über seine Grenzen durch die Anfügung weiterer Dreiecke ins Endlose weitermäandern, in jeder Dimension. Das Relief regt zum Nachdenken über Endliches und Unendliches an: Spiegelt sich das Endlose in seinen Bauteilen, ist also der Makrokosmos im Mikrokosmos enthalten? Oder ist es ein Widerspruch in sich, dass das Endlose sich aus begrenzten Teilen addieren könnte?
Wie dem auch sei: Zum Himmel sieht Justine Johnson mit einer ähnlichen Aufmerksamkeit wie ein Haiku-Dichter, der versucht, für seine ganz alltäglichen Sinneseindrücke wach zu bleiben. Ein schon recht alter japanischer Haiku lautet so: “In der Papiertür Löchlein der ganze Himmelsstrom”.

ProjekTraum FN ist stolz, die Arbeiten von Justine Johnson zu präsentieren. Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, an der Eröffnungsrezeption für Indigo teilzunehmen. Johnson ist eine amerikanisch-britische Künstlerin aus Kalifornien, die ein Interesse an japanischen Textilien hat, vor allem an der Shibori und der Yuzen Färbetechnik. Sie studierte bei Hiroshi Hashida in Osaka, Japan und arbeitete später in Hong Kong als Designerin und Kunstdirektorin in der Modebranche. Sie hat einen BFA in Theaterkunst an der Staat-Universität von San Francisco, ein BA von der Westwales-Schule der Kunst und ein MFA an der Middlesex Universität, in London. Johnson ist fasziniert von Landschaften, Sternenlandschaften, Kultur und menschlichen Technologie. Ihre Arbeit ist mit Prozess verknüpft und erforscht das Universelle in Einzelheiten und Verbindungen von Materialien über Zeit und Ort.

Die Musiker Nikolai Gersak (Keyboards) und Alain Wozniak (Klarinette, Elektronik) begleiten die kurze Einleitung und das Künstlergespräch (auf Englisch) und betrachten den Klang des verspäteten Indigobaums

ProjekTraum FN is proud to present the works on paper of Justine Johnson. We warmly invite you to join us at the opening reception for Indigo. Johnson is an American/British artist originally from California who developed an interest in Japanese textiles especially Shibori and Yuzen techniques. She studied with Hiroshi Hashida in Osaka, Japan and later worked in Hong Kong as a designer/art director in the fashion industry. She has a BFA in Theater Arts from San Francisco State University, a BA from West Wales School of Art, and an MFA from Middlesex University, London. Johnson is fascinated by landscapes, starscapes, culture and human technology. Her work is linked to process and explores the universal in particulars and connections of materials across time and place.

Musicians Nikolai Geršak (keyboards) and Alain Wozniak (clarinet, electronics) will accompany the brief introduction and artist talk ((in English) and contemplate the sound of late winter Indigo. Beginning at 14:00.

Inspired by the research of Joachim Ernst Berendt Liminal Spaces uses frequencies calculated by the circulating time of the planets. An oscillator playing alongside the performance reproduces these frequencies. The melodies used are transcribed from traditional ceremonies of Native Americans from North-Central America.
Each movement describes another state of mind, the liminal space between dreams and real world.
