Edition of 100[/x_text][x_blockquote cite=”Christopher Atkins ” type=”left”]”All of this is to say that Jim has a long view of history. And it’s the best kind of history, since it’s infused with equal parts artistic influences and cultural legacies, expressed by an artist who wears it all on his sleeve. When he pulls back, cranes up, and unfurls the view in historical narratives such as “Casino Sunrise,” he creates a busy scene of fact and fiction. Of course it’s unreal. But one quickly sees how creative exaggeration, what Jim has referred to as “mythological narrative,” is one of his best weapons. By using it here, like his favorite Surrealists, he is better able to bring stories from the past into contact with a present where some things, unfortunately and amusingly, have not changed. ”

Felicia Glidden is interested in assisting Denomie to broaden his audience in Europe. They both grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and inviting him to Friedrichshafen for the premier of her project space is a way of grounding herself in her new home in Germany.  Glidden never imagined she would be living in the south of Germany (or she would have studied the language much sooner), but somehow, moving to Europe is teaching her a great deal about what it means to be an American. Jim Denomie’s work is rooted in the American experience, in ways that reflect contemporary society and reach back into a history of painful truths.

The fourteen artworks in the exhibition are primarily portraits. The catalog includes a broad range of selected images of Denomie’s paintings over the last 20 years.[/x_text][/x_column][/x_row][/x_section]
